Opening hours

The Illyés Gyula Archives and Workshop began operating within the framework of the Institue of Literary Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Science. Its ceremonial opening took place on April 15 2003. Gyula Illyés’s library and a large part of his handwritten heritage found its place in the Archives. His photographs, video recordings and audio tapes are also in the Archives.

The library’s collection mostly consists of books signed for Gyula Illyés. Its original condition is preserved by Mária Takács in her two volumes book titled The Library of Gyula Illyés.

The counting and reorganizing of the books is finished.

  1. Catalogue of the Book Collections at the Archives (Made by: Mihály Benda, Kinga Morvay, Szilvia Anikó Papp, Mária Stauder. Edited by: Mária Stauder.)
  2. Periodicals
  3. Auxiliary materials on how to use the catalogue and the periodical-list

The archiving (saving them on CD and DVD) of the audio tapes and video recordings that we possess is finished. These audio and video materials are now serving the researchers. The members of the Audio Department of the Petőfi Literary Museum helped us in the archiving process. The detailed description of the audio material is our continouos work. During the process we received valuable help from Mária Illyés who is the writer’s daughter.

The literature historical value of the recordings could be very significant for those who research the twentieth century and moreover the French-Hungarian literary connections and for university students.

The manuscript bequest (manuscripts of published works, typed texts, diary notes) is being preserved under a classification principle with the help of literary advisors whose advice was required by Mrs. Gyula Illyés (Flóra Kozmutza). The manuscript bequest is going to be reorganized according to the rules of the Academy Manuscript Deparment. Those preserved typed texts, newspaper cut-outs, printer’s prooves, notes, broadsides (posters, brochures) and other miscellaneous items that are not clearly manuscripts are also being continouosly separated and registered.

We also inform those who are interested in the writer’s correspondence. For researchers there is an opportunity to study the letters written to Gyula Illyés as well. We appriciate every information that tells us that outside of known public collections where can we find other letters or manuscripts written by Illyés. (Collectors, owner, original addresse or his/her family member might have them in their possesion)

During opening hours we accept researchers and readers in the manuscript department according to the regular rules.

The Archives received the literary remains of László Gara in July 2005. The inheritance was shipped to Budapest from Paris with the help of National Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Paris. There are copies of the inheritance remained in Paris.

There are organized conferences and book presentations take place in the Archives’ conference room with other departments of the Institue of Literary Studies, university departments and publishers.
